Knee Arthritis

Knee Arthritis is a degenerative joint condition that leads to inflammation, pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility in the knee. It occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the bones gradually wears away, causing increased friction, swelling, and discomfort. As the condition progresses, everyday activities such as walking, climbing stairs, or standing for extended periods can become increasingly challenging. In severe cases, arthritis can lead to joint deformity and significant loss of function. Early diagnosis and a comprehensive treatment approach—including lifestyle modifications, physical therapy, medications, and in some cases, surgical intervention—can help manage symptoms, preserve joint health, and improve overall quality of life.

Causes of Knee Arthritis

  • Repeated Stress & Overuse – High-impact activities, frequent kneeling, or heavy lifting can contribute to joint wear and tear.
  • Genetics – A family history of arthritis increases the risk of developing the condition.
  • Osteoarthritis (OA) – The most common cause, where the knee cartilage gradually wears away due to aging and wear-and-tear.
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) – An autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation and joint damage.
  • Post-Traumatic Arthritis – Arthritis that develops after knee injuries such as fractures, ligament tears, or meniscus damage.
  • Excess Weight & Obesity – Increased stress on knee joints accelerates cartilage degeneration.

Symptoms of Knee Arthritis

  • Weakness & Instability – Feeling like the knee may "give out" while walking or standing.
  • Grinding or Cracking Sounds – A sensation of bones rubbing together, also called crepitus.
  • Persistent Knee Pain – Aching or sharp pain that worsens with movement or prolonged activity.
  • Stiffness & Reduced Flexibility – Difficulty bending or straightening the knee, especially after sitting or resting.
  • Swelling & Inflammation – Visible swelling around the knee due to fluid buildup.
  • Pain that Worsens with Weather Changes – Increased discomfort in cold or damp conditions.
