Osteoporosis Treatment

Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by weakened bones that are more susceptible to fractures and breaks. The bones become porous and fragile due to a decrease in bone mass and density. Osteoporosis commonly affects older adults, particularly postmenopausal women, and can lead to serious fractures, especially in the spine, hips, and wrists. This condition often progresses silently without symptoms until a fracture occurs. Early detection and treatment are crucial to managing osteoporosis and preventing fractures. Treatment options include medications, lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise, and fall prevention strategies to maintain bone health and reduce the risk of fractures.

Causes of Osteoporosis

  • Gender – Women are at a higher risk, particularly after menopause, due to a drop in estrogen levels.
  • Family History – A family history of osteoporosis or fractures increases the risk.
  • Age – Bone density naturally decreases with age, especially after the age of 50.
  • Hormonal Imbalances – Low estrogen in women and low testosterone in men can lead to bone loss.
  • Inadequate Nutrition – A lack of calcium and vitamin D in the diet can contribute to weakened bones.
  • Sedentary Lifestyle – Lack of physical activity and weight-bearing exercises increases the risk of osteoporosis.
  • Medications – Long-term use of corticosteroids, some anti-seizure medications, and other drugs can lead to bone loss.

Symptoms of Osteoporosis

  • Loss of Height – Gradual loss of height due to vertebral fractures or collapse of the spine.
  • Decreased Flexibility & Movement – Limited mobility due to fractures or pain.
  • Fractures – Frequent fractures, especially in the spine, hip, or wrist, after minor falls or injuries.
  • Postural Changes – A stooped or hunched posture caused by compression fractures in the spine.
  • Back Pain – Chronic back pain, which may be caused by spinal fractures.
  • Weakness – Decreased strength and difficulty with tasks that involve lifting or carrying.
